Introduction

Areta Governance specializes in supporting DAOs and foundations to establish and grow decentralized governance structures. We develop tailored solutions in governance inception and optimization, ecosystem growth, and service provider selection. Our connected investment bank with deep strategic expertise, enables us to serve our partners holistically, rather than working in isolated governance silos.

We have had the privilege to work for some of the leading companies and DAOs in the crypto space (Safe, Uniswap, Aave and dYdX). Examples of our work include managing a larger Aave delegation, setting up key contribution initiatives for SafeDAO, leading the first cross-ecosystem growth initiative for Uniswap and Arbitrum, and crypto-native transactions like the first acquisition of Coingecko or the sale of Solscan to Etherscan.

As DAOs emerge from their infancy, their structures have proven powerful tools for enabling decentralisation and autonomy. We view a well-designed governance system as a critical enabler for decentralized projects to allow them to leverage decentralization as a strategic advantage, rather than an inconvenient necessity (where most of the market is currently at).

However, DAOs often encounter challenges in maintaining organisation, highlighted by governance issues such as contributor onboarding and delegate overload. These scenarios highlight areas where DAOs can improve by establishing structured processes for better collaboration and being open to further strengthening against inefficiencies.

Recognising the need for evolution, we focus on excellent DAO participation with robust, defensible analysis of proposals through a structured voting process while simultaneously applying our deep institutional knowledge and strategic governance expertise to offer proactive DAO governance solutions aimed at nurturing the ecosystem for the long term.

Delegate Motivation

As long-term supporters and contributors to Safe DAO, we are well-versed with the Safe ecosystem, its stakeholders, and many of the larger delegates.

Over the course of our involvement in Safe DAO, we have led and supported key initiatives with dedicated teams:

  1. Contributor Efficiency System (CES): In an effort to support SafeDAO’s key contributor initiative OBRA, we developed a contribution efficiency system that enables the DAO to operate seamlessly, enhancing transparency and elevating process standards to an institutional level. (Link: Snapshot Vote; Forum Post)
  2. Token Liquidity Event: We supported SafeDAO as a key partner in the token liquidity event with in-depth analyses, process support, and collaboration with large parts of the team. We acted as process lead, sounding board, and governance facilitator. (Link: Forum Post)
  3. Among the most active contributors: We have supported the DAO with analyses and thorough feedback on key initiatives on and off the forum. We are active on all governance calls, providing feedback and strengthening the DAO’s decision-making processes. (Link: Forum Profile)

Core Tenets as Delegates

Areta’s core tenets as delegates are as follows:

  • 100% Voting Participation - we are deeply invested in the ecosystem and our goal is to meaningfully support its direction via thoughtful, educated governance decisions.
  • Independent and Impartial Voting - our voting is strictly informed by critical analysis and years of experience and is not based on bias or external influences.
  • Communication of Voting Rationale - we will communicate the rationale behind our votes through frequent updates to this thread, making us accountable to the community.

We will achieve these core tenets through our unique sources of value as follows:

a. Structured & Streamlined Voting Process

Our team lead adds new proposals to a shared tracker and assigns each incoming proposal to a specific member of the team.

  • For each proposal, we prepare a standard memo summarising the key issues, the black and white hat case (pros and cons), and a recommended decision with accompanying rationale.
  • Each proposal is then peer reviewed by another team member.
  • For complex proposals that require more discussion, we involve more members of the team as necessary to form a joint opinion.
  • We then publish our voting rationale externally on our public forum.

We always try to base our votes on sound, defensible rationale so that we are internally consistent and our voting track record stands up to external critique.

b. Ecosystem Growth and Expansion to Institutions

Leveraging the Areta network to promote and foster flourishing ecosystems across DAOs. Bringing unprecedented ties to a deep traditional network of corporates, strategics, and investors.

c. Governance Optimisation

Utilising our expertise to diagnose, analyse, correct, and enhance the effectiveness of DAO governance, ensuring streamlined operations and decision-making, while building up accountability structures.

Proposal: [SEP 34][OBRA] Resource Lock Module - Cometh & Gnosis Build & OneBalance

Vote: FOR
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal seeks to allocate $75K to building a new module on top of Safe that enables instantaneous cross-chain interactions, which is key for powering cross-chain asset transfers/execution. We support this proposal as we believe it can potentially expand Safe’s usage and adoption across multiple networks and solidify its position as the leading multi-chain smart contract wallet solution. Additionally, the initiative aligns with the goal of fostering Safe’s module ecosystem, extending the composability of the Safe Protocol.

Proposal: [SEP 35][OBRA] Improve Voting UI/UX with SAFE on Mobile

Vote: FOR
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal seeks to allocate $20-28K to Lighthouse for implementing UI/UX changes on Safe for Mobile. The proposed changes aim to significantly reduce transaction execution times, thereby providing a seamless voting experience for SAFE users. As this essentially fosters governance participation, we support this proposal.

Proposal: [SEP 36][OBRA] - Simulations/Demos and Tidbits for all Safe Use Cases

Vote: FOR
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal seeks to allocate $24K to DoDAO for the purpose of creating demos and easy-to-digest guides on all Safe use cases. Areta supports this proposal because we believe it can bring an increased level of awareness to Safe’s products. We appreciate the experimental approach in wanting to prove value first before allocating more capital.

Proposal: [SEP 37] [OBRA] Contribution Efficiency System (CES) Extension - Areta

Vote: ABSTAIN
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal seeks to extend the Contribution Efficiency System (CES) for Safe DAO. The CES supports OBRA initiatives by providing contributor onboarding, program support and comprehensive reporting, effectively elevating Safe DAO operations to an institutional grade. As the CES Program Managers, we will be abstaining from this vote in order to remain neutral.

Proposal: [SEP 38] [OBRA] Governance Accessibility and Participation Enhancement at SafeDAO - StableLab

Vote: ACCEPT
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal seeks to allocate $35,000 to StableLab for the purpose of improving governance participation by providing frequent governance updates/summaries, hosting monthly onboarding calls, and providing ad-hoc support to SafeDAO workstreams. We are in support of this proposal and in general, initiatives that seek to boost community engagement within SafeDAO, as we believe it is a clear need for the DAO. Having worked with StableLab on their previous OBRA initiative (for the CES), we believe they are a capable and equipped partner to effectively tackle such a proposal.

Proposal: [SEP 39] [OBRA] Public API Development and Continuation of SafeDAO Governance Analytics Dashboard Services - Curia

Vote: ACCEPT
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal seeks to allocate $50,000 to Curia for the purpose of continuing the operation of the SafeDAO Analytics Dashboard for an additional six months. The dashboard provides key metrics about SafeDAO governance, consistently published through reports on this Forum thread. The insights from these reports are valuable, providing yardsticks for measuring participation in governance, proposal outcomes, and voting power dynamics. We are in support of this proposal because it provides a key entry point into assessing what needs to be improved in SafeDAO governance, and enhances transparency within the DAO.

Proposal: [SEP 40] Governance Cycle Amendments Season 3, Sprint 3

Vote: ACCEPT
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal seeks to amend SafeDAO’s governance cycle structure by primarily introducing a freeze period for proposals where changes are disallowed, and shortening the voting period from 12 days to 9 days. The rationale behind introducing a freeze period is to ensure that proposal feedback is implemented in a quick and non-disruptive way. Shortening the voting period creates 3 extra days between cycle votes, ensuring there is a cool-off period for voters. In effect, these changes will ensure active participation by proposal authors and reduce voting congestion, allowing delegates to optimally participate in votes with more time for thoughtful decision-making. We are in support of this proposal for these reasons.

Proposal: [SEP 41] [OBRA] Safe Ecosystem Roundups and Highlights by FinOps3

Vote: ACCEPT
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal seeks to allocate $25,000 to Kolektivo Labs to produce newsletters, blogs and videos on the Safe Ecosystem for the next five months. This proposal is in line with the larger effort to boost community engagement and increase awareness of the Safe ecosystem among builders and users. These community engagement efforts are a necessary piece in both invigorating the current group of Safe stakeholders as well as enticing new and talented contributors to the DAO. We are therefore in support of this proposal.

Proposal: [SEP 42] [OBRA] Simulations and Report: Safings Accounts and Safe Vaults - Kolektivo Labs & Hopper Protocol

Vote: ACCEPT
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal seeks to allocate $35,000 to Kolektivo Labs and Hopper Protocol to conduct research assessing the potential impact of Safings Accounts and Safe Vaults on SAFE token utility. The DAO decision to enable token transferability has brought with it the onus on DAO stakeholders to find meaningful and robust use cases for SAFE token. The proposal is aligned with the broader goal of improving the utility of the SAFE token, increasing its adoption and attractiveness to investors and users. We support the research/data-driven approach as a necessary precursor to the direct implementation of features or programs, and will therefore be voting in favour of this proposal.

Proposal: [SEP 43][OBRA] ZK Email Account Recovery - ZK Email

Vote: ACCEPT
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal seeks to allocate $50,000 to ZK Email to implement an account recovery system for Safe wallet users, using the ZK-Email SDK. This project presents an important use-case for users who lose access to their credentials, rendering them unable to access their wallets. Furthermore, email-based recovery has become ubiquitous even for web3-native products due to its intuitiveness and consumers expectations of account recovery recourse. We are therefore in support of this proposal as we believe it extends the utility of the Safe wallets for less savvy users.

Proposal: [SEP 44] Creating SafeDAO’s first revenue stream through Community-Aligned Fees

Vote: ACCEPT
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal introduces SafeDAO’s first revenue stream which strengthens token utility, community governance and empowers the vibrance of the ecosystem. Areta is in favour of establishing native swap fees as the initial revenue stream and as a logical starting point for ecosystem fee generation. We look forward to seeing how this revenue generation can be built on down the road.

Proposal: [SEP 45] Implementation of Transition Period for Committees and Councils Structure

Vote: ACCEPT
Type: Snapshot

Rationale: This proposal aims to signal SafeDAO’s intent to move forward with a Committees and Councils Structure 15 and introduce a transition period to allow sufficient time for its full implementation. Areta supports this proposal to give the necessary lead time, and associated pause of funding new OBRA initiatives, to ensure the Committee and Council structures are properly and thoughtfully implemented.
