Update on OBRA Wave 2

Hey everyone, hope you’re doing well. In light of the recent structural changes to the team and refinements to our strategic priorities, we believe that it is important to align the ecosystem‑support strategies of the SEF and SafeDAO more closely. As the current OBRA framework only applies to asks under $100 k, we still do not have an optimal vehicle for supporting larger initiatives. Hence, before the next grant wave goes live, we would like to establish a more cohesive operational setup capable of processing funding requests of all sizes while balancing the ecosystem’s needs.

This is currently under development at SEF and will be shared for feedback once we have a robust draft ready. However, we do expect a delay from the previously communicated deadline (Season 6 / Sprint 1). Thank you for your patience!

Hey Aman,

Thanks for the update. It’s great to see thoughtful progress on a funding mechanism that can support diverse request types while staying grounded in the broader needs of the ecosystem.

I wanted to resurface a point we’ve touched on in past calls: the concept of convertible grants. These would function as grants initially, but convert into investments if certain milestones are met, like raising a priced round or hitting meaningful growth targets. They might be especially well suited for projects that need early support to validate a novel proof of concept before they’re ready for venture funding.

As we explore the possibility of larger grant sizes in OBRA 2, it feels like the right time to also build in structures that ensure long-term sustainability for the DAO. Convertible grants could be one such lever.
Let me know what you think, and if this is being considered for OBRA 2.

Yes, this is part of our discussions as I mentioned in the previous governance call!
